Autobiography of a Sadhu

Against the backdrop of arcane Indian tradition, this fast-paced, often self-effacing adventure story treats the reader to a rare insider’s perspective and a unique insight into the esoteric path of Sanatan Dharma and India’s diverse Hindu culture.

During the Allahabad Maha Kumbh Mela in 1971, on the banks of the River Ganga, Baba Rampuri became the first foreigner initiated into the spiritual and sometimes dangerous world of India’s most ancient and mysterious order of yogis and sadhus, the Naga Babas – going back to the time of Adi Shankara, and before, to the Guru of Yogis, Lord Dattatreya.

The world of Hindu Mythology becomes alive as Baba Rampuri enters the portal of the Extraordinary World. He must learn the rules and obtain the protocols of knowledge in a strange language.

An American by birth, he has embraced the Sanatan Dharma, and lives in India for more than forty-five years practising and teaching the ancient tradition.

Excerpts from Autobiography of a Sadhu

Chapter 2: “I Dream India into Existence”
I dreamed India into existence. Not that it was my personal private dream, but a believable movie reasonably constructed from the group psyche. It was comforting this dream, cushioned, as it were, with familiarity. It tamed the wild profusion of things, using the sights, sounds, and faces of India as its raw material. Everything might appear different from my ordinary world back home, but I knew that this was the way it was supposed to be. It was a good dream, it made me feel happy. — (SEE ALL THE EXCERPTS)

Reviews from Autobiography of a Sadhu

“…Baba Rampuri gives us an in-depth view of many of the common elements of Yoga and Indian spirituality, religion and culture, as well as an immersion in those areas normally hidden from Western eyes. In questioning his own pre-conceived perceptions, he contradicts the Western view of India and Yoga and reveals cultural constructions that hide deeper and more compelling knowledge…” — (SEE ALL THE REVIEWS)
