Autobiography of a Sadhu

Among NAGA BABAS in Mystic India

Baba Rampuri’s Story

An autobiographical novel describing his years of discipleship among Naga Babas.

During the Allahabad Maha Kumbh Mela in 1971, on the banks of the River Ganga, Baba Rampuri became the first foreigner initiated into the mystical and sometimes dangerous world of India’s most ancient and mysterious order of yogis and sadhus, the Naga Babas, going back to the time of Adi Shankara, and before, to the Guru of Yogis, Lord Dattatreya.

The world of Hindu Mythology becomes alive as Baba Rampuri enters the portal of the Extraordinary World. He must learn the rules and obtain the protocols of knowledge in a sacred language.

After traveling at age 18 from his native California to India in 1969, Rampuri was drawn to the Naga Babas, an ancient and wild order of naked yogis whom he calls the “Hell’s Angels of Indian Spirituality.” Organized into an order by Adi Shankara in the 5th century BC, the Naga Babas see themselves as the ultimate protectors of the Sanatan Dharma, or what is called the Hindu Religion.

From drinking the “Nectar of Immortality” at the source of the River Ganga to allegations of the tantric murder of his guru, Autobiography of a Sadhu; an Angrez among Naga Babas often reads like a fast-paced adventure story, but it is the true account of a nineteen-year-old American who, in the late 1960s, sets off for India in search of Supreme Knowledge.

Enchanted by an extraordinary world he stumbles into the presence of the sadhu, Hari Puri Baba, a yogi in the ancient tradition of the Dasnami Sannyasis. Hari Puri proceeds to shave the young man’s head and initiate him into his order. Now called Rampuri, the young man embarks on discipleship, unlike anything he could have ever imagined.

Within the arcane & sometimes even dangerous akhara, Baba must overcome opposition to himself as a foreigner and struggle to reconcile the Western view of India with the reality of Her culture.

All the while seeking Supreme Knowledge.

Facing conflicts of mythological proportion & the mysterious death of his guru, he stays the course and is now a guru, himself, within the ancient order.
