Navratri Day 2 – Monday, 12 October 2026

Invoking Brahmacharini Devi

The ladies may wear White today

Brahmacharini Ma

Mother Goddess as Yogini — Brahmacharini Ma

On the second night of the waxing Moon, we worship Durga Ma as the tapasvini, Brahmacharini Ma, who we also know as Uma Sati, who performed unthinkable austerities to become the consort of the Lord of Consciousness, Shiva, as predicted by the sage Narada. She holds her rudraksha mala in her right hand counting eternity, and a kamandal full of amrit, the Nectar of Immortality, in her left, dangling a lotus flower. She wears effulgent white cloth, and is noticeably barefoot. She is steadfast, unshakeable, and her pure consciousness manifests as ultimate love. In the Storytelling, she also exposes arrogance even in great beings such as that of her own father Daksha Prajapati. In this way Her worship is a remedy for anger, lust, and arrogance.

She may be worshipped with lotus flower and hibiscus, and this stuti:

या देवी सर्वभूतेषु ब्रह्मचारिणीरूपेण संस्थिता।

नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

Yā Devī sarvabhūteṣu Brahmacāriṇī-rūpeṇa saṃsthitā,

namas tasyai namas tasyai namas tasyai namo namaḥ.

दधाना करपद्माभ्यामक्षमालाकमण्डलू।

देवी प्रसीदतु मयि ब्रह्मचारिण्यनुत्तमा॥

dadhānā karapadmābhyām akṣamālākamaṇḍalū,

devī prasīdatu mayi brahmacāriṇyanuttamā.
